What Causes Chronic Stress?

Chronic stress can be caused by a whole host of factors, but typically, they will fall into the following four categories:

  • Emotional stress: when an individual is struggling with difficult emotions, such as anger or sadness
  • Environmental stress: stress associated with where an individual is living or working
  • Work-related stress: any stress that has been caused by and challenges or pressures from working
  • Relationship stress: this can be caused by any struggle with friendships, family relationships, colleagues or partners

Importantly, people vary in their responses to stressors, and what causes chronic stress for one person might not have the same effect on another. Chronic stress can have serious implications for physical and mental health, so it’s crucial to develop healthy coping mechanisms and make positive changes to mitigate its effects early on.

Chronic stress is a pervasive condition that can have a significant impact on your body, mind and lifestyle. Whilst many stress management strategies exist, one that is gaining more attention in recent years is Zone Technique, a new, progressive approach to healthcare that has delivered unparalleled results to those suffering with chronic stress. Here’s what some of our clients at The Health Advantage have said about Zone Technique:

“I was recommended to see Jonathan for my lower back pain, but Jonathan helped not only with my back pain, but with my panic attacks and my whole well being. He recovered my nervous system” – Facebook Review

“In too much pain to cope, I felt I would be better off dead. A while ago, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia by my GP. Since March 9th 2023, after years of agonising pain, I promise you – I am pain free” – Facebook Review

“Can not recommend Jonathan enough!! I’ve suffered with a bad back for 7/8 years, after a few weeks of appointments with him, I am fixed” – Facebook Review

In this blog, we will explore the causes and effects of chronic stress in greater detail, as well as the ways in which Zone Technique can help to eliminate it and offer people a renewed sense of balance and vitality. Keep on reading to learn more!

What Is Chronic Stress?

Chronic stress refers to a prolonged state of heightened alertness and physiological arousal that occurs when the body reacts to high intensity stressors. Chronic stress is recurring and can often last months, setting it apart from acute stress, which most people will experience on a daily basis, for example when stuck in a traffic jam or planning an event.

With chronic stress, cortisol (the stress hormone) will be released consistently, rather than in small bursts. This is partly why for a lot of people, conventional relaxation techniques, mindfulness or prescribed medication don’t seem to help mitigate its effects. At The Health Advantage, we have met several clients suffering with chronic stress, who have visited doctors to no avail and feel like they have exhausted all options.

What Causes Chronic Stress?

  • Work-related: career-related issues, such as heavy workloads, looming deadlines, job insecurity or a lack of work-life balance, can be significant contributors to chronic stress.
  • Relationship problems: turbulent relationships, whether with partners, family, or friends, can fuel chronic stress. Constant conflicts, unresolved issues, or a lack of support can lead to a persistent state of emotional strain.
  • Financial strain: money worries are another common cause of chronic stress. The uncertainty of unstable finances, mounting debts, and an inability to meet financial obligations can keep stress levels consistently high.
  • Health complications: managing an illness or caring for someone who is unwell can also have an effect on a person’s level of stress. The ongoing demands of medical appointments, treatments, and lifestyle adjustments contribute to chronic stress.
  • Environmental factors: finally, our surroundings can also play a role in chronic stress. Living or working in noisy, polluted, or unsafe environments will gradually wear on the body and mind.

It is important to note, factors that can cause chronic stress for one person, might not have the same effect on another. Stress levels will ultimately differ based on your personality and the way you respond to different circumstances.

How Can Chronic Stress Affect Your Body’s Six Zones?

If you’ve read our introduction to Zone Technique, you’ll know that this healthcare approach is based on the notion that the body has six core zones or systems, which if disrupted by emotional, physical or chemical stressors, will cause pain and illness. Chronic stress can have an effect on each of these zones:

1) Glandular System

Chronic stress can have a significant impact on various glands in the body, primarily through the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system. When a person is suffering with ongoing stress, their adrenal gland will produce more cortisol, which will then have a knock on effect for all of the other body’s systems, leading to issues such as a weaker immune system, slower metabolism, high blood pressure, poor gut health and irregular menstrual cycles.

2) Eliminative System

Chronic stress can also affect your eliminative system and urologic health. It isn’t uncommon for people to experience urinary tract infections, incontinence and other bladder conditions as a result of ongoing chronic stress.

3) Nervous System

The nervous system is particularly responsive to stress levels, as it is responsible for regulating each of the body’s unconscious functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, urination and respiratory rate. All of these functions will therefore be affected by chronic stress, as well as many others, such as your mood, ability to sleep, hormones and reproductive system.

4) Digestive System

The gut-brain connection is well-documented, and chronic stress significantly influences digestion. Stress can lead to issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, and even contribute to the development of ulcers. Stress can alter the balance of gut bacteria, affecting overall digestive health.

5) Musculoskeletal System

You’ve probably experienced muscle tension when stressed, which can evolve into chronic muscle pain. Stress can cause the muscles to remain in a constant state of tension, leading to headaches, neck pain, back pain, and even conditions like fibromyalgia. Additionally, stress-related muscle tension can affect your posture, potentially leading to long-term musculoskeletal issues.

6) Circulatory System

Chronic stress takes a toll on your heart and blood vessels. Elevated cortisol levels contribute to increased heart rate, blood pressure, and inflammation. This combination can lead to hypertension, atherosclerosis, and an increased risk of heart disease.
